The battle over Atlantic Yards may be winding down, but a new battle has begun over Prime 6, a new live music venue and sports bar that is being built in a former video store just blocks away from the future home of the Brooklyn Nets. It shouldn't surprise anyone that some entrepreneur would hope to open a venue to capture some of the game day and concert traffic that would flow to the area once the arena was completed, but neighbors are up in arms over Prime 6, because as resident and non-fiction writer Steve Ettlinger explains, "it is completely in conflict with an internationally famous, family oriented area." What is it about Prime 6 that has Mr. Ettlinger and his writer friends so crazed?
Foes point to a MySpace page (which is probably bad enough) with a list of friends who are mostly females in seductive poses and various states of undress, as well as a mixtape by hip hop artist DJ Big Jeff who has used profanity in some of his previous work. Won't someone think of the children? Brownstoner also took a peek into the Prime 6 construction site and declared that it was "looking pretty B&T". Bridge and Tunnel in Brooklyn? No way!
Construction on the space is well underway, and now the Prime 6 owners have to go in front of Brooklyn's Community Board 6 to grovel for a liquor license. The meeting is tonight, and should be a doozy.
