Vanishing New York has a lovely look back at the history of B&H Dairy, a staple in the East Village since the late 1930's. Accounts from a daughter of the original owner and a longtime waiter touch upon the clientele ("actors and actresses, the hippies, the yippies, the beatniks, the bohemians"), the customs (yelling "Jumbo jockey!" to big tippers), and the vibe of the place.
