Approved for Coal Oven, Grimaldi's Reopens in New Spot

Famous Brooklyn pizzeria and tourist favorite Grimaldi's successfully relocated to a new space just around the corner from its old spot this weekend. And in an unexpected move, the city gave the owners permission to install a real coal oven in the new space, a rarity these days as most working coal ovens must be grandfathered in. Said the owner's daughter, "We have the same lines, the same oven and the same menu."

Grimaldi's relocated after a drawn out and public rent dispute with its former landlord at 19 Old Fulton St. In a twist, the landlord signed a new lease with the original owner of Grimaldi's (who sold the shop in 2000), and he will return to the pizza biz with his new spot Juliana's, opening this March. The owners of both pizzerias downplay their rivalry and say the neighborhood can support both shops.
