Last night, all manner of glittery literati gathered at the Kaufman Center for a memorial for Elaine Kaufman, the famous restaurateur who died last year. Among the attendees and speakers were Elaine Stritch, Liz Smith, Dick Cavett, restaurateur Joe Allen, Gay Talese, and James Lipton who said Kaufman was "as close as we will ever come" to having a modern Gertrude Stein.
