One would think with the amount of commerce, attractions, and relative wealth surrounding Union Square, it would be overrun with great places for grabbing a drink. Yet besides some sports bars, a smattering of restaurants, Old Town Bar, and Bar Jamon, it's pretty slim pickings around there. Until now. Tonight master sommelier Laura Maniec opens her hotly anticipated new wine bar and educational center Corkbuzz. The wine bar portion of the space is open seven nights a week and offers a menu of snacks like chicken liver toast and shishito peppers, salads and sides, and shareable plates including hamachi crudo, prawns with kabocha squash butter, bone marrow and blue cheese brulee, and more. All are meant to pair well with the ever changing wine list.
As for the wine classes, they're offered on a walk-in basis or can be booked ahead, and they cost around $75 for a two hour session. They'll be taught by Maniec and other wine pros and will help students "learn more about what wines they like, and why." To learn more check them out here, and don't forget to send early word this way.
