Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are five choice dining events going on around the city:
1) The Standard Ice Skating Rink/Kaffeehaus:
Where: 848 Washington Street
When: All weekend
What: The Standard Hotel in the MeatPacking District just opened its ice skating rink for the season, as well as its adjacent Alpine-themed food stand, Kaffeehaus. Snacks include waffles, soups, sweet and savory crepes, spiced apple cider, beer, and wine.
2) "Untitled (Free)" at The MoMa
Where: 11 West 53 Street
When: Food served from noon until 3 PM every day
What: The MoMa is showing a food-related installation from Argentine artist Rirkrit Tiravanija from now until the end of February called "Untitled (Free)." Every day from noon until 3 PM, guests at the exhibit will be offered a vegetarian Thai green curry for free. The idea here is to create a communal, restaurant-like environment in a space that is more commonly associated with fine art.
3) Food/Drink/Movie Pairings at Nitehawk Cinema
Where: 136 Metropolitan Ave
When: All weekend
What: The new movie theater/restaurant in Williamsburg just got permission to serve alcohol inside the theater, which means that you can enjoy their clever food, drink, and movie pairings while watching one of the big critically-acclaimed indie films of the season. Right now, the line-up includes: The Descendants (with a Hawaiian pulled pork sandwich and "King Family Fortune" cocktail), The Skin I Live In (with chicharrón paella and sangria), and My Week with Marilyn (with artichoke queen dip and a "Marilyn" cocktail).
4) Remembering The Fulton Fish Market
Where: 210 Front Street
When: 12 - 7 PM Saturday and Sunday
What: An art exhibit for food history buffs: the @SEAPORT! Gallery is now showing a series of paintings of the Fulton Fish Market by Naima Rauam. The artist spent over two decades drawing and sketching the vendors and personalities of the market.
5) Cheese 101 Class at Murray's
Where: 254 Bleecker Street
When: 5 - 6:30 PM Saturday
What: Murray's is offering a crash course in fall cheeses today at their Bleecker Street flagship. The class includes tastings of several different varieties, with notes by instructor Sydney Willcox. A few $50 tickets are still available.
Also of Note: The Brooklyn Flea is today and tomorrow at Skylight One Hanson in Williamsburg. If you're hungry for steak this weekend, check out Eater's ultimate steakhouse guide.
