In what will probably come as a surprise to no one, a new Fortune article reveals that Danny Meyer's burger chain Shake Shack constitutes almost one third of the profits from his Union Square Hospitality Group, which encompasses many fine dining restaurants, seasonal stands, and a catering arm in New York.
The piece also imagines a world in which there are Shake Shacks in suburbs across the United States, even though Meyer had said it's not in the chain's "DNA" to grow without seasoned staffers in place to help in the expansion. They write, "Real estate is cheaper in the suburbs, and you don't have to pick one-off locations like a major league stadium or an urban park...For Danny Meyer, the DNA of the boutique burger may be changing."
