Matt Levine's Sons of Essex Now Open

New, 5 comments

133 Essex Street, Lower East Side
Status: Certified Open

After a few weeks of preview dinners (including a birthday party for Padma Lakshmi) Matt Levine and Michael Shah's Sons of Essex is now open in the old Mason Dixon space on the LES. In front, there's a deli which sells coffee, tea, local baked goods and other treats to take away, including Guss' pickles and Robicelli's cupcakes. The main bar and dining room in the back serves a menu of New American fare like crab and artichoke dip, truffle mushroom pizza, steaks, chops, and a lobster pot pie.

The room has an old-timey feel, with lots of brass, worn wood, and low lighting, plus photos from the nearby Tenement Museum. The deli space is open right now and the back space opens for dinner and drinks tonight. For more on the vibe of the place, check out the official trailer (which also features Padma), and do send any early reports our way.
