Crack Downs

2011_01_limoMePa.jpgThe Taxi and Limousine Commission and NYPD are cracking down on the limousines and Town Cars that flood the Meatpacking District every night trolling for illegal fares. Drivers caught in the sting are usually fined, but some offenders have had their cars impounded. But why the MePa instead of anywhere else? Officials believe that the rich folks who flood the neighborhood to buy bottles in the nightclubs prefer the luxury of a limo to a plain old yellow cab for their ride home. It couldn't have anything to do with the difficulty in finding a cab between 1:30 and 3:00 AM on a weekend night in the middle of winter. [NYP]
