Signs of Life at the Famed Monte's Venetian Room

Pardon Me for Asking notices today that work is actually being done at Monte's Venetian Room, the very old onetime Rat Pack hangout in Gowanus that closed its doors in 2008 after over one hundred years in business. Like the Chumley's of Brooklyn, Monte's was said to close for renovations, but as the years drew on locals began to lose faith. Last May, a Marshal's notice adorned the door.

But now, a dumpster! Paper taped over the windows! Could the original be coming back? Or did someone finally take the lease? As PMFA points out, the restaurant was slipping in its last decades, but it sounds like it would have been a wonderful Who Goes There? subject. After all, the owners always claimed it was the oldest Italian restaurant in New York.
