2011 is shaping up as a major comeback year for the man once dubbed the Mayor of the Meatpacking District, David Rabin. After the low points of watching Lotus give way to Abe and Arthur's and the disaster that was Los Dados, Rabin has been riding high with his partnership with Geoffrey Zakarian at the Lambs Club in midtown and the late 2010 opening of Jimmy at the James Hotel. Now Rabin tells us that after many, many delays, his return to the MePa is oh so close with Double Seven 2.0. The lounge was gunning for a summer 2010 opening, but more construction problems delayed the opening into 2011. Rabin tells Eater that "I didn't go for about a month to see it because frankly I stopped even believing my partner (1/2 kidding) that it was progressing ...then I went last week and boom. It is way beyond plywood. It looks nearly what it will look like when done." Good news.
Apparently that's not all that Rabin has cooking in the MPD. Several Little Birdies report that Rabin and his team are close to locking up a deal for the nightlife venues at the Dream Downtown, Vikram Chatwal's soon to open Cheese Grater hotel in the area where the MPD morphs into Chelsea. The partnership makes sense, since the Lambs Club is at Chatwal's eponymous hotel near Times Square. Everyone is staying mum on the project for now, but expect this to happen in the next few months.
