The East Village branch of Aces and Eights that replaced the former Mo Pitkin's was hated by the community from the get go, but they had managed to get through their first year and a half of operation relatively unscathed. it probably helped their cause that they never bothered to get an operating permit from the Department of Health, meaning that they should have never opened in the first place! The lack of the permit finally caught up to Aces and Eights this week after a month long campaign by Community Board 3, and it was shut down yesterday by the DOH. The bar's management says it is working to correct the problem and hopes to reopen soon.
