Almost one year after iconic Upper West Side restaurant Cafe des Artistes closed, a new operator, Gianfranco Sorrentino, has signed a deal to takeover the space. Sorrentino, the owner of Il Gottopardo in Midtown who has also operated Bice and Sette MoMA in the Museum of Modern Art, plans on opening the space as an Italian restaurant by February or March after dropping over $1.5 million in renovations.
All of the restaurant's famous murals will remain intact, with much better lighting. One thing that will not remain intact: the union that was blamed for closing the restaurant in the first place and that may have scared off many an interested operator over the past year. The restaurant's name will change the reflect the new Southern Italian focus.
