For awhile now, popular East Village Italian spot Max has had its eye on a corner space on 36 East 2nd St. They had notices up, went before Community Board 3. But seven months later, there's not much outward progress of the space. And now there's this: on the just released Community Board 3 agenda, the owners of Max are applying for a liquor license for the current Tonda space. Tonda, you will recall, was once European Union before being revamped into the underwhelming pizza place it is now. The space also has a long and tortured history with the liquor license board. Perhaps Max is ditching space number one or is on the verge of an East Village empire.
Meanwhile, Ichiban, the Japanese steakhouse chain is applying for 71 Clinton, once home to the famed 71 Clinton Fresh Foods and most recently, Fat Hippo, Novella is seeking the Itzocan space, and a place called Wackywok is opening on Avenue D.
