What a long strange trip it's been for 5 & Diamond, the Harlem restaurant that opened with such potential and recently sputtered out so disappointingly. When the restaurant debuted last March with Ryan Skeen at the helm (who at the time said he was a partner), it was seen by some as part of a Harlem renaissance that also included the opening of Bier International, a giant beer garden, the upcoming Red Rooster, Mel's Burger Bar, and Harlem Tavern. Then Skeen jumped ship in June after getting a smattering of positive reviews and getting in a fistfight with his then GM, leaving his next in command David Santos. He left the restaurant last week.
Now, Zagat reports that the restaurant is closed for renovations until September 8. Probably they are out trying to secure a new chef.
