At Vermilion

The only argument against deathwatching At Vermilion, a failed translation of a supposedly successful restaurant in Chicago, is that it soldiers on. It would have been in the hospice back when it opened were it not for a year long Deathwatch moratorium. Now it just seems an oversight.

The critics panned or ignored the place when it opened, and it has problems of size, location, design, and upkeep. Readers, this year and last, have written in to tell tales of poor experiences, cutting corners in the kitchens, inner turmoil. And yet, the place lives on, mostly due to owner Rohini Dey's focus on events and the slashing of food costs. The whale may languish longer still, but the fate here is sealed.
