A Bourbon At...Hecho en Dumbo

Hecho en Dumbo, the restaurant, can be good. Hecho en Dumbo, the bar, can be great. Offering an array of Mexico-city inspired small plates, Hecho en Dumbo is the perfect place to pop in for some drinks and a snack. The table service can be a little erratic so stick to the seating at the bar or at the kitchen counter in the back. On a recent visit, my date and I were seated at a “communal table” that was actually just a standard 4 top. There was an awkward moment under the table to say the least.

Mixing alcohol and spicy food can be like throwing gasoline on a fire, but the bourbon paired surprisingly well with many of the dishes at Hecho en Dumbo. The acidity of the bourbon cuts the richness of guacamole much better than any Margarita can. And the pork dishes were crying out for a bourbon chaser.

The bourbon list, like the skirts of the hot twenty-somethings at the bar, is long enough to cover the essentials but short enough to keep things interesting. If you can’t find something you like here, chances are you probably don’t like bourbon. Final verdict: Go for the tacos, stay for the bourbon.
