Here's something you don't see every day. Manchester, England based dance club Sankeys will be opening a New York location in Hell's Kitchen. According to the release, the club will be taking over a 16,000 sq ft former garage space with a capacity for 1100 clubbers, easily making it one of the largest clubs in the city. Sankeys owner David Vincent says the New York expansion has been planned for a while, explaining that "out of all the cities that have made Sankeys what it is, New York has, without a doubt, had the biggest influence on our music, design and technology. We built Sankeys in Manchester with all the great New York DJ’s’ in mind, and most importantly, to make sure that they always feel welcome."
But unlike the club friendly confines in the UK, New York's neighborhoods and the NYPD usually put these large, DJ driven clubs under the microscope. Rival venues like M2 and Pacha have both been shut down for months at a time after NYPD raids, and the market for these sorts of clubs in New York is dedicated but relatively tiny. Smaller clubs like Provocateur, Kiss and Fly, and Pink Elephant attract a high end house music clientele, so Sankeys may have some trouble making a go of it unless they have the right New York team behind them.
