Williamsburg Japanese restaurant Zenkichi has abandoned its plans to open on the Bowery after a negative reaction from the neighbors. Construction has begun on their cool new age-y design, but owner Shaul Margulies tells Zagat that the landlord must simply be continuing the work on his own.
For now, Margulies is funneling his energies into the original North 6th Street space and adding an adjacent sake and oyster bar. A tipster sent a photo (above right) over the weekend of new work they're doing in their yard area, meaning construction on the new space has most likely already begun.
