Sam Mason Opens East Williamsburg Bar Lady Jay's Tonight

New, 20 comments

Tonight is the grand opening of Williamsburg bar Lady Jay's, chef and tv host Sam Mason's first venture since the long, sad decline of his SoHo spot Tailor. Despite his previous restaurant experience, Lady Jay's will not be serving food. "I'm taking a break from food," Mason said, adding that he would probably return to the restaurant scene next year.

Mason said he decided to try his hand at a bar, which is located just a block from his apartment—and right across the street from neighborhood holdout Bushwick Country Club—because it's just a good investment opportunity. "Everyone in their right might would want to own a bar....Well, OK, maybe not," he says with a chuckle.

The bar, named for Mason's great-grandmother, was built by Mason and his partners over the last seven weeks and includes a backyard wooden deck that's the same size as the interior. The interior is spare, with antlers on the walls, a few booths, a shuffle bowling machine and a jukebox. Williamsburgers: let us know how it is.
