After an outpouring of support from the Upper West Side community for its Fairway Cafe, the suits at the supermarket have decided not to close the restaurant, a move they were seriously considering. Gael Greene reports, "Fairway Café will not be closed...Instead 300 sq.ft. at the Market on Broadway between 74th and 75th will be seized for a bagel station to bake fresh bagels hourly for the retail bakery below." The folks at Fairway considered closing the cafe right around the time that competitor Trader Joe's made inroads in their area. But an online petition and protests from the community may have helped to save it from the chopping block.
