Just after Astor Place sees the return of its beloved Mud Truck, tragedy strikes once again. Karen's on Astor, the vegan friendly (but not all vegan) sandwich and soup shop and neighborhood staple for over a decade, closed overnight. A tipster saw owner Karen Slater there this morning taping up the windows, but she wasn't ready to offer an explanation. When called moments ago, she said she would email her customers with an update. For now, here's her goodbye note on her website:

Karen’s On Astor is regretfully closed

I wish to thank all of my loyal customers of the past 13 years. You have been a constant source of appreciation and have always remained grateful and inspiring. It has been a privilege to serve you.

Thanks go to my employees who during this period have been hard-working and dedicated and without you all of this would not have been possible.

I will keep you updated of my next steps and invite you to join my email list so that I can inform you of future ventures and adventures.

I am deeply grateful to all of you and hope to be of service again in the near future.

I wish you all continued health, joy and prosperity.

Warmly,

Karen Slater

It's a bizarre turn of events given the shop is consistently busy. Laments our tipster, "This is strange. Sad! It was the only (that i knew of) vegan breakfast/lunch place and a nearby alternative to the morning starbucks lines. Dangit." Dangit is right. We will return with an update once we find out more from Karen.
