Seven month-old Williamsburg bar The Woods just sent out an email to its patrons and supporters requesting attendance at tonight's Community Board 1 Safety Committee meeting in Williamsburg. Why? The bar—known for its backyard food truck—wants to open yet another bar, accessible through its backyard. But don't fear NIMBYs, this is not any old bar. First, it will only be open on Fridays and Saturdays. More importantly, it will function as a community center the rest of the time. From the email:
- The Southside CSA will use The Woods as its distribution center for its members to pick up food on a weekly basis. If the new back bar opens, the CSA will have a dedicated space at The Woods for food distribution.- The Woods is also working with the CSA on community gardening efforts in our expansive backyard. This includes plans to plant an urban garden on the rooftop of the back bar.
- The new back bar space can serve as a community meeting place for groups such as NAG, OSA, etc. The space will be closed for normal service during most weekdays and nights, so it can be easily dedicated as a private meeting space or operated as a cash bar for fundraisers.A win for bargoers and community activists? Or an evil nightlife plot to scam an approval for a growing bar empire? We'll go with the former. The meeting is tonight at 6:30 at 435 Graham Ave.
