Nightlife Notebook: Bottle Service Ban, Bouncer Brawls

New, 8 comments

BOTTLE SERVICE— Is there a bigger threat to bottle service than the lawsuit filed on behalf of a former 1 OAK waitress? How about a law that would make bottle service illegal? An intrepid commenter referenced some stalled legislation by the New York City Council that called "on the SLA to ban the practice and licensure of applicants proposing 'bottle service'". Although this bill did not pass, this isn't the first time that the Council has proposed this, and it usually gets re-introduced after a high-profile incident occurs at a nightclub. [EaterWire]

LISTICLES— It's been a month for nightlife lists. A few weeks back, gadfly Justin Ross Lee introduced the Most Hated People in Nightlife list, followed by a list touting the Most Beloved People In Nightlife. Both were rather boring, but should serve as a reminder to be careful who you include on a list. Avenue's Rich Thomas, who was the #1 Most Hated, allegedly punched JRL in the stomach and stole his camera earlier this week. Both lists are all wrong anyway. The most important people by far are the bar backs that keep the ice buckets filled and bathrooms clean, and the least important is everyone else. [Club Planet]

WEST VILLAGEDe Santos has converted the lower level of their underrated Italian eatery into Janis, named after the building's former resident Janis Joplin. According to the intel, the conversion is extremely lo-fi and it seems that De Santos simply swapped out the restaurant furniture for some standard red leather banquettes and sealed up the once open kitchen. MEATPACKING DISTRICT— Soho House is working hard to shed its corporate membership, but it's still holding on to its less than artistic past. An email blast from their PR firm touting the member hotel's refreshing strawberry lemonade cocktail includes a reminder that "even Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte enjoyed it in a summer episode." It may be time to find a more relevant reference. [EaterWire]

EAST VILLAGE— After seeing the confusion over their Sunday drink specials, a V Bar representative dropped into the comments, saying "Sorry for not being super clear/specific- we PROMISE we will use our sandwich board with caution from now on... And THANKS for the kind intro - we love being a part of the neighborhood." Is there anything better than a happy ending? [Eater Wire]
