Michelle Obama Takes Girls on NYC Food and Theater Tour

New, 9 comments

While President Obama was busy this weekend overseeing the passage of some bill, the First Lady Michelle Obama escaped a tense Washington D.C. by paying a quick visit to New York with her two daughters. Here's what she was up to while the politicians battled it out over health care:

1) Dylan's Candy Bar: On Saturday evening, Michelle and the kids stopped in at Dylan's Candy Bar, the Upper East Side sweets shop to by some candy. The entire block around the store was shut down.

2) Astor Place Theater: Word has it, they caught a performance of Blue Man Group. They sat in the third row.

3) Mesa Grill: Yesterday afternoon, the FLOTUS and daughters had brunch at Bobby Flay's Chelsea Southwestern restaurant, Mesa Grill. Flay was in the house as was Next Food Network Star's Bob Tuschman. The street was apparently blocked off with 10 SUVs and 30 secret service men, but the crowds still cheered for her as she exited.

4) Empire State Building: Many tourists were left stranded at the top of the Empire State Building when the Obamas stopped in.

5) Shubert Theater: The three Obamas and a couple of the girls' friends took in a matinee of the new musical Memphis. Per one tweet, the show had to start late because the audience clapped for the first family for so long. They stayed in their seats until the final bows.

6) Magnolia Bakery: Famous cupcakerie Magnolia was shuttered while the Obamas bought some cupcakes after the show.

Oh, and then she had time to go an be on the Simpsons at 8 PM (or was that Angela Basset?).
