For the last month, the gate has been rolled down tight on the old East Side Company Bar/future tiki bar Painkiller space on 49 Essex. Last night, the beginnings of a makeshift plywood entrance made its first appearance, meaning the building out of the space—soon to be home to a New York tiki culture—has finally reached a new phase. The bamboo has arrived, the bar and some booths are already in place, and the whole interior is in the midst of a new paint job. Fans of East Side will notice the space is of course similar but there's a pretty thorough gut job going on right now. The owners—who also own Dutch Kills in Queens—plan on opening between April 11 - 14.
