A tipster at last night's Community Board 2 meeting in Brooklyn reports that River Cafe was indeed approved for what some thought would be a controversial cabaret license request. Reps for the restaurant, which again pays next to nothing in rent, said the cabaret license was intended to bring a "supper club" ambiance to the space, allowing diners the chance to dance after a late dinner. Worried that the prospect of turning the prime East River space into a club was too tempting, the board added a stipulation that the restaurant must "maintain the intent of the license," to ensure the only dancing there would be of the ballroom variety.
