When news broke earlier this week that a planned new development and renovation of two buildings on Lower 2nd Avenue would lead to the two year closure of famed dive Mars Bar, it was unclear how extensive the construction would actually be. Now, after attending last night's Community Board 3 meeting, Curbed reports that "Rumors of Mars Bar's demise have been greatly underestimated." The renderings presented by the developers show completely new buildings, not just renovated, updated versions of what stands today. Meaning: Mars Bar will be rebuilt from the ground up. Meaning: it won't really be Mars Bar.
The committee supported the measure, and it will probably pass in front of the full board later this month, as both the tenants and the business owners under the buildings support the project.
