'Tis the season for copious year end list making! Last week, both TIME and Epicurious dropped their major food trends pieces to wrap up the year, and this week we have not just one but five major (some more major than others) outlets chiming in to explain to us all what was good, great, not so great, and downright terrible about the year in dining. Ready to relive some things? We have a primer:
The Publication: Bloomberg
The Title: Best Restaurants of 2010 Offer Truffles, Octo-Dogs
By: Bloomberg's food critic Ryan Sutton
The Conceit: Ryan Sutton lists his top ten restaurants of the year while throwing in some digs at his least favorites
The Big Winners: The Breslin, Ma Peche, Torrisi Italian Specialties, Maialino, Colicchio & Sons, The Mark, Peels & Seersucker, Brooklyn Fare, Eataly, and Kajitsu
The Big Losers: Scott Conant ("Scott Conant gave us crummy Italian (Faustina), confirming his role as the next Todd English...") and The Lion, named the worst restaurant of the year.
The Publication: GQ
The Title: GQ Eats: The 10 Best New Restaurants in America
By: Restaurant critic and food writer Alan Richman
The Conceit: Richman names his top ten restaurants across the country
The Big Winners: Lincoln, The Kitchen at Broklyn Fare
Interesting Take: Lincoln, a restaurant that disappointed many critics in its failure to meet their high expectations, here is called "Almost Instantly, America's Most Intelligent Italian Restaurant"
The Publication: Time Out New York
The Title: The Year in Dining
By: TONY's editors and critic
The Conceit: The four staffers name their most memorable meals
The Big Winners: The Breslin, ABC Kitchen, Peaches Hothouse, Kaz An Nou
Cocktails Too!: The team also highlights the best cocktails of the year, found at Peels, Anfora, Highlands, and The Lambs Club
The Publication: Metromix
The Title: Year in Dining: Power 10 of 2010
By: Metromix staff
The Conceit: Metromix names the 10 important people, be they chefs, bloggers, publicists, or restaurant owners, that have shaped the year
The Big Winners: Anita Lo, the Immaculate Infatuation blog, Marc Forgione, Danny Meyer, and others.
The Funny: John DeLucie's publicist is in there for getting him so much ridiculous press.
The Publication: Bon Appetit
The Title: The BA Foodist's Top 10 Dishes of 2010
By: Restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton
The Conceit: Knowlton names his best dishes of 2010, in the US and abroad
The Big Winners: Here, Pulino's is called out for its Farro budino, and Torrisi Italian Specialties for its Fusilli with dirty duck ragu.
But no fear: the year end wrapping up doesn't end here. Expect at least three more lists from Metromix, some from the blogs, perhaps the Voice, and oh yes, we get in the game during the week between Christmas and New Years.
