The Lower East Side Business Improvement District has petitioned the NYPD to allow off-duty officers to patrol the neighborhood in uniform on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The goal of the new beat would be to control the outdoor unruliness stemming from the bar patrons who flock to the neighborhood every weekend and not to police what happens inside the bars themselves. The program would be paid for by the LES BID, but still requires the approval of the NYPD, and it remains unclear if seeing a uniformed cop would somehow reduce drunken yelling whatsoever. [NYP]
