A press release today confirms earlier rumors that David Chang is opening a branch of his East Village restaurant Momofuku in Star City, a casino that is currently undergoing a $860 million refurbishment in Sydney, Australia. It will be his first outside of New York and outside of the U.S. as he bypasses Los Angeles for Down Under.
Chang tells the Sydney Morning Herald that he hasn't decided exactly how his new restaurant will take shape, that they're still "hammering out" the ideas. He adds that "People are excited about food in Australia. It's fresh and it's energetic...Australians are very serious about their food, their coffee culture and their drinks. It's a fascinating place." A Momofuku restaurant and a restaurant from Nobu alum Chase Kojima and a handful of others will open sometime next year.
