After Tax Seizure, Aspen in Flatiron Closes For Good

New, 4 comments

Weeks after bring seized by the Tax Man, Steve Lewis reports that Greg Brier's Aspen Restaurant and Lounge is officially closed for good. If you recall, the restaurant blamed the original closing on a simple clerical error, in which an office employee let the liquor license expire that then brought an unpaid tax bill to the attention of the tax man. Aspen expected to reopen in a matter of days but wasn't able to, and according to Lewis, the temporary closing cost the restaurant its all important holiday season which it needed to stay in business.

Lewis, who also designed the space, goes on a rant about the location (22nd street between 5th and 6th is less than ideal. There isn’t much around it, little foot traffic and few neighbors), and the Community Board, saying, "Aspen was victim of the mindset of a community board that wants fewer licenses. 21st street between 5th and 6th is a targeted area with constant police harassment, similar to what destroyed, for all intents, the West 27th street club corridor." With a clerical error to a tax seizure to a full closure and a rant against the Community Board, the end of Aspen really has it all. For those who want to enjoy a taste of Aspen without leaving New York, the Aspen Social Club remains in business.
