Vintry Conjures Memories of Manhattan Boom Time

Vintry Wine and Whiskey is Stone Street's bar baron Peter Poulakakos' latest entry, offering the Financial District's worker bees and residents a speakeasy vibe without any of the pretentiousness that bars of its ilk usually serve with their cocktails. Vintry is heavy on small batch whiskey's and wines, and hearkening back to the boom days of Dow 14,000, offers s a list of reserve wines ranging from a few hundred bucks to $23,000. But in today's Dow 10,000 Manhattan, Vintry serves with a heart. In yesterday's Boîte, bartender Ivan Mitankin recalls refusing to sell a drunk banker an $800 bottle of wine, saying “we’d rather give the wine away for free to someone who will really appreciate it.” Not very good business, but very thoughtful. Hopefully, the owner agrees with that choice, or old Ivan's next gig will be at this place.
