This year Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery (spelled two different ways on the official signage) turns 100, and to mark the occasion, the City Room runs a tribute to the LES stalwart. A few fun facts: Yonah Schimmel is believed by many to have invented the knish; the bakery opened just after Katz's and right before Russ & Daughters; Schimmel started the business by selling his wife's knishes out of a pushcart; there was once a knish cartel of the LES. Of course, a huge number of people on Chowhound still hate the place.
