After making a splashy move from the West Coast into the Bryant Park Hotel, the celeb and expense account friendly Koi grew a bit weary of their midtown locale. As their original lease began to wind down, the Koi team targeted a big move to the new restaurant row on the Bowery and made plans to purchase the current Salvation Army building and transform it into a three story den of sushi debauchery. Knowing that they would be facing an uphill battle with the Community Board, Koi attempted to conduct outreach to key members in order to get their buy in before licensing meeting. While the plan was solid, the execution was a bit lacking, and CB 3 dropped its mighty hammer on Koi's Bowery dreams. Six months later, and there has been nary a peep from Koi about their shattered downtown dreams.
According to a well placed tipster, Koi has abandoned all hopes of making the Bowery deal work, and instead has decided to re-sign at the Bryant Park Hotel. A call to Koi's reps in LA confirms the move, meaning that the Bowery will continue to hold onto its past, at least until the community gets on board with its next potential owner.
