In two weeks, the Grand Street Hotel will go before Community Board 2 for liquor licenses again. It will be contentious. Todd English will apply for a restaurant called Oliver Todd in the hotel on 25 Great Jones. A spot called Cheers will replace the club Le Royale on 7th Ave. South, and someone will try to move into the shuttered Country Club space. The Mott will appeal to the neighbors once again. But these applications are all small potatoes. Why?
Chumley's, the long shuttered, much chronicled Village landmark is finally applying for a liquor license, meaning it may someday, possibly, if things go okay and maybe the DOB backs off and the contractors follow their deadlines OPEN. Just two and a half years after it shuttered and was completely dismantled.
Surely, someone will be there with support petitions, but please Community Board 2, no trouble for these guys. Whether it's a Disneyfied version or the real deal, don't be the group that stood in the way of the Chumley's comeback.
