A sign outside the restaurant reveals that Birdies, the East Village fried chicken spot that replaced Flor's two years ago, is closing today and moving down south. Get over there now to buy their fryers and silverware. Known mostly for its often disappointing fried chicken and, more recently, for a hilarious surprise visit from a hawk, Birdies really had no chance with all the new competition around (ahem, Momofuku Noodle Bar). That said, a local vegetarian reports it's a major loss for fake-meat lovers.
But it's not all bad news in the East Village today. Yokocho will reopen tonight after a recent DOH shutter.
