Times Like These: Turning TOTG Into a Club

Central Park West: Transracial reports that starting this Thursday, the famed (and up for grabs) Tavern on the Green will host a weekly club night called Tavern Club, "complete with bouncers, bottle service and the folks that love ‘em." Fun! Who could be behind the master scheme to turn an overpriced touristy restaurant into an overpriced club? None other than Suzie Wong's owner, the eccentric and bellicose JE Englbert. Bonus: "Engelbert...says he's using Club Tavern as a test-site of sorts for future Central Park lounge locations." See you guys there?

Update: The Tavern on the Green people say the whole thing was a fabrication!:

NEW YORK, June 9, 2009 – The historic Tavern on the Green will not become a disco or operate a nightclub in Central Park as stated in an erroneous “press release” issued earlier today by a person heretofore unknown to the restaurant’s ownership and management.

Club owner JE Englebert is not authorized to issue any communication on behalf of or associated with Tavern on the Green; nor is Todd Shapiro Associates contracted to represent the restaurant."
