The Plywood Report: Fort Defiance, Ward III, Calexico

New, 1 comment

1) Red Hook: An Eater correspondent went on a little jaunt to Red Hook to check in on some new spots we've been tracking. New sausage house Grindhaus hasn't shown sign of progress. Same goes for the Italian restaurant O Barone going into the old 360 space. Meanwhile, Calexico looks like it could be ready any day now. [PLYWOOD]

2) Midtown: Roving photog Will Femia notices a new restaurant/lounge going into the McGraw Hill Building on 48th between 6th and Times Square. It will be called Forty Eight and is scheduled to open Summer '09. [PLYWOOD]

3) Tribeca: Metromix has a preview of Ward III, the new bar opening in the old QDT space on 111 Reade St.: "Ward III's offering a handful of specialty cocktails to choose among...And though the drinks are fancy, the bar's vibe is more casual-comfortable and 'vintage Tribeca' than Intimidating Cocktail Palace...the concept at Ward III is "if you're here you can eat," with an around-the-clock (11 a.m. - 4 a.m.) eclectic new-American/international menu..." [PLYWOOD]

4) Red Hook: A tipster reports that the plywood has finally come down on Fort Defiance (above) the Red Hook coffee shop/cocktail bar/restaurant opening soon by Pegu club alum and Brooklyn writer St. John Frizell. [PLYWOOD]

5) East Village: EV Grieve reports that the old Five Roses space on 1st between 10th and 11th has been gutted. [PLYWOOD]

6) Williamsburg: A new Turkish takehout spot is opening next to Bliss on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg. [PLYWOOD]

7) Astoria: Harris Graber notices that plywood vet Bare Burger seems to be getting closer to opening on 34th Street and 31st Avenue. [PLYWOOD]

8) Carroll Gardens: Cobble HIll Blog notices some activity in the old Cafe Dore space: "The restaurant never seemed to have a good amount of customers, leading me to wonder how it survived, until it closed down this past winter for “renovations.” There’s some definite construction going on inside and work permits on the doors..."
