1) Williamsburg: FreeWilliamsburg sends along word that plywood vet Mesa Coyoacan opened officially on Friday night in the former Pampa Grill space. They write: “A traditional Mexican restaurant from chef Ivan Garcia, original menu designer for Barrio Chino and most recently chef de cuisine at Mercadito. There’s nothing avant-garde about the menu, most of which will seem familiar at first glance--his “grandma’s recipes,” as Garcia put it, down to house-made tortillas--albeit with modern touches such as Berkshire pork in the carnitas tacos and grass fed beef for the carne asada.” Status: Certified Open. 372 Graham Avenue, Williamsburg; (718) 782-8171. 2) Park Slope: Plywood vet Brooklyn Larder from the Franny’s folks will finally open tomorrow according to PR. NYMag runs a piece today on the expansion of Brooklyn gourmet shops and shares these deets: “What was conceived as a small cheese shop grew to encompass a streamlined selection of kitchen staples:?but aside from good taste and a modern, almost stark aesthetic, what set Bklyn Larder apart from the competition are its prepared foods, which range from heritage-pork porchetta to a selection of sandwiches. The current roster includes a grilled L’Etivaz cheese, a broccoli rabe with young Pecorino, and a Burgers’ Missouri bacon with hard-boiled egg, which is the closest New Brooklyn General Storekeepers get to a BLT when it’s not tomato season.” Status: Not Open. Opening tomorrow at 11am. 228 Flatbush Avenue, Park Slope; (718) 783-1250. [Eater Inbox, NYM]
3) Midtown: The Strongbuzz and others report that the Palace Hotel's outdoor patio, Palace Gate opens this week, writing: "Sitting under the stars outside the Villard Mansion, you can order from Gilt’s Executive Chef Justin Bogle new bar menu: suckling pig tacos served with queso fresco, salsa roja, and radish, or The Gilt Burger, topped with aged cheddar, house-made pickles, crispy onion rings and house-cured bacon. Wash it down with a Pimm’s Cup (Pimm’s No. 1 Cup, Lemonade, Granny Smith Apple, Ginger Beer, and Cucumber) or one of 20 wines by the glass." Status: Not Open. Opening Friday. 55 Madison Avenue, (212) 891-8100. [Strongbuzz]
4) Williamsburg: NYMag reports on the opening of Sel de Mer, a new Mediterranean restaurant in Billyburg opening up right next door to, (wouldn't you know it), Mesa Coyoacan. They write: “Think of the menu at Sel de Mer, a new seafood–focused restaurant in the old Najeeb’s space, as “a Mediterranean–meets–Long Island kind of thing,” says chef-owner Jeff Slagg: whole roasted dorade and three moules-frites preparations, but also steamers, fish-cake sliders, and fish and chips. That goes double for the new bar. “I wanted it to look like an old dock,” says Slagg, who did a stint at Oceana and more recently ran the kitchen at Sweetwater. “I’m just really into the water.” Status: Certified Open. 374 Graham Avenue, Williamsburg; (718) 387-4181. [NYM]
5) Bed-Stuy: NYMag also reports on Saraghina, a new pizzeria (shock) that will open this week in Bed-Stuy. “It’s like a dream come true,” says Mantelli, whose day job is co-owner of the Tocca clothing brand. In Italy, according to him, children do not aspire to grow up to become firemen, astronauts, or heads of state, but rather pizzaioli. “Yes, really, every child wants to make pizza.” At Saraghina, named for a character in Fellini’s 8 1/2 that pizza will be Neapolitan in style, as taught to Mantelli by his friend Michele Iuliano of Luzzo’s in the East Village, and cooked in a wood-fired oven. Nanni also owns Piadina in Greenwich Village.” Status: Unknown. No phone yet. 435 Halsey, Bedford-Stuyvesant; no phone yet. [NYM]
6) Williamsburg: Metromix shares some opening weekend photos of the new Beauty Bar in Bushwick. Meanwhile TONY had this to say about it: "Beers from Sixpoint and Brooklyn Brewery are on tap, the vintage hair dryers are in place, and the $10 martini-and-manicure deal is available Wednesday through Saturday after 6pm. New to this location: throwback finger foods like pigs in a blanket." Status: Certified Open. 921 Broadway, Bushwick; (347) 529-0370. [Metromix, TONY]
