The Epic Plywood Report: Recess, Sal Anthony's, The Smile, Minetta Tavern, Ritz Asia, Subway

New, 1 comment

1) Carroll Gardens: Brownstoner snaps this pic of a yet unnamed plywooded space at 269 Baltic Street, as well as a few details: "We tried getting in touch with the owner to get more detail but to no avail so all we know is what's on the construction permit: It'll be a "eating/drinking establishment" and have 21-foot ceilings. Anyone know anything else about the plans for the space?" [PLYWOOD]

2) Central Village: Crain's reports that a new (and clearly much-needed) fro-yo shop called Recess is set to open on University Place. They write: "The store recently signed a 10-year deal for 1,300 square feet at 60 University Place, at East 10th Street. The asking rent was $250 a square foot. Co-owner Alex Kim once owned frozen dessert shop Flirt in Murray Hill. At his new venture, he will also sell smoothies, gourmet chocolate and coffee from the Dominican Republic." [PLYWOOD]

3) NoHo: Grub Street learns that a new boutique/cafe, tentatively named, The Smile, will open in what was once a possible Double Crown location at 26 Bond St: "Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman of clothing label Ernest Sewn...have taken over the space that AvroKO abandoned after community protest, and plan to open it around March 6 as a boutique serving coffee and what chef Melia Marden tells us will be “simple, light, Mediterranean-influenced” dishes." [PLYWOOD]

4) Greenwich Village: Update: Grub Street shares some new pics of old plywood vet, Keith McNally's soon-to-open revamp of Minetta Tavern. The plywood has finally come down and she's showing a bit more skin. Deep breaths. PLYWOOD]

5) Park Slope: Gowanus Lounge shares a pic of a former real estate office that's supposedly turning into a new eatery on 5th Ave: "There’s paper covering the window and a building permit issued two days ago showing that it’s being converted to a restaurant/drinking establishment. There are no clues on the permit as to what kind of place it will be and we couldn’t find any pending liquor license application." [PLYWOOD]

6) Greenwich Village: Update: Guest of a Guest digs up some more info and a pic of plywood vet, Ritz Asia: "The owners managed to recruit two chefs from the Nobu Waikiki at the Waikiki Parc Hotel to head up the kitchen. Although they firmly dismiss the culinary crime of menu piracy, it is hard to deny the presence of so many Nobu classics. But with prices listed at nearly half the cost, who cares! Pending some disaster with bad ingredients, this may very well be the best recession news to hit the food scene yet?" [PLYWOOD]

7) East Village: A former Burritoville space is now under construction and going to be a Subway reports EV Grieve who shares the following: "Locals will no longer have to walk a few blocks out of their way for a Subway. As Jeremiah reported a few weeks back, a Subway was taking over the former Burritoville space on Second Avenue near Ninth Street...the signs are going as we speak. Or type. Or something." [PLYWOOD]

8) East Village: A few weeks back we noted EV Grieve's reporting that the former Taco Bell space on 3rd Ave was going to be a new eatery called Thai Bodhi Tree. A tipster shares the above interior and exterior construction shot. [PLYWOOD]

9) Gramercy: A tipster sends snaps of a former Sal Anthony's space on Irving Place rumored to become a raw food eatery: "Apparently, it's now going to be a raw food place. It's next to The House, that weird restaurant, and of course, pure food is just steps away." [PLYWOOD]

10) Greenwich Village DBTH has some new intel on a Mexican tapas place on 6th Ave and 8th St.: "The lounge, now called Su Casa, is the brain child of David Howell (Suede, Libation), Steve Salis and Deena Sayers (Surf Lodge). According to our Little Birdy, Su Casa will have "tapas served nightly, and the whole place will have a rustic old-world Mexican feel." [PLYWOOD]

11) LES: Bowery Boogie runs some new pics of White Slab Palace at 77 Delancey: "...the Swedish eatery is still in limbo with the gates usually drawn and the exterior somewhat disheveled. Yet on random nights, the owner and some friends can sometimes be seen inside drinking at the bar." [PLYWOOD]

12) Nolita: The Feed reports that Toby's Public House in Brooklyn is setting its sights on Manhattan: "So says the spot’s owner Christine Iu, who rang this afternoon with the news. She’s hunting for a spot in Nolita or Soho (but she’ll do with midtown, too). In the realm of restaurant spaces, it’s certainly a buyer’s market." [PRE-PLYWOOD]

13) Williamsburg: And finally, a shot, above, of a new restaurant, Nha Toi, going in on Havemeyer. [PLYWOOD]
