Le Gamin Among Restaurants Adding Service Charges

New, 10 comments

East Village: Earlier this week The Post reported on sneaky restaurants throughout the city that are adding a mandatory 15 - 20% service charge to all diners' checks. Later, Newyorkology checked in with the Dept. of Consumer affairs and confirmed the practice is illegal in almost all cases. It is only acceptable to add a service charge for a party of 8 or more, and it can be no more than 15%. Well, we have a new culprit to add to the list. A tipster sends in the above receipt from the East 5th Street location of Le Gamin, where a check for two diners includes an additional 20% tip.
