The Readers Chime in With Eight More Re-Review Candidates

New, 7 comments

Yesterday, the team here at Eater threw out a list of 10 restaurants that Sam Sifton may want to re-review during his tenure as critic at the Times. We asked readers to chime in to get the discussion going—some choices went over much better others—and add their own suggestions. Thus, here now, submitted for your approval, eight more restaurants Eater readers feel deserve either an upgrade, a downgrade, or simply a reintroduction to the general dining public:

Veritas: The most people chimed in for Veritas, the Gramercy threespot that hasn't been reviewed in ages: "Veritas. Not because its rating is wrong for its current food (its three-star rating is just right). But because its Chef and, indeed, its entire food concept have changed after it was last reviewed. Veritas's current Chef, Gregory Pugin, has to be the least-recognized great Chef in New York. People should be turned on to the fact that this is some of the best classic French food in the City."

Per Se: "He is more likely to re-assess Per Se, which got its four stars before Masa did, and will be shortly introducing a new chef de cuisine." Excellent point.

Lure: "I think Bruni killed them when they first opened. They are a solid deuce. They were great then too, I think."

Gotham Bar & Grill: "It hasn't been 're-reviewed' since the Reichl days at the NYT in 1996! We all know it'd get three stars yet again, but, Christ, in a year that brought about the demise of so many great restaurants, isn't it time the Times remind us just how good Gotham B&G has been, remains and will (seemingly) continue to be, hmm?"

The Modern: "The Modern should be re-reviewed simply because it’s the most egregious of Bruni’s mistakes."

Jean Georges: "What about Jean Georges? Been a while and those mediocre lunches are really starting to look quite inferior compared to Marea, EMP, even Aureole and A Voce."

SHO Shaun Hergatt: "SHO deserves a real review. But one that will take the food seriously, and not dismiss it because of the restaurant's decor and the food's unfashionability"

Falai: "I think Sifton should make a fast track down to Falai and see what is taking place there. The food is inventive and extraordinary. There are very few restaurants creating a fine dining experience like Chef Mauro is at Falai. It is a real treat to eat there."
