Over the weekend, a number of tipsters wrote in to report that the uptown location of "hotspot" Mama Mexico was seized for non-payment of taxes late last week. Laments one fan, "Was always jammed with customers serenaded by waiters who strolled threw the crowd singing Mexican tunes. Must have pulled in a small fortune so why the lax of paying taxes? West 102nd location has had the lights dimmed and tables cleared but the bar is still stocked with booze and wine so it looks to passerby like the restaurant has taken a siesta." This isn't the first setback for the high end mini-chain this year. They were hit with a class action lawsuit in August and were accused of withholding wages and overtime compensation, misappropriating employee tips, retaliation, pregnancy discrimination, encouraging a hostile work environment, and assault and battery.
Though Menupages is already listing the place as closed, a worker at the restaurant says they hope to reopen today.
