Mad River, the Upper East Side sports bar popular with University of Wisconsin alumni, learned the hard way that selling a popular Wisconsin brew in New York State is against the law. Reps from the New York State Liquor Authority raided Mad River in November and discovered 50 cases of New Glarus Spotted Cow, the sale of which represents a violation of strict alcohol distribution laws. Unfortunately for the world, New Glarus brewery does not distribute its delicious beers outside of Wisconsin, focusing on quality over quantity. The brewery had heard rumors for years that bars in New York City had been selling their product, but were never certain since they weren't selling it to anyone outside of Wisconsin. Mad River faces charges of purchasing from an unauthorized source and selling unlicensed beer. In a way, it's comforting to know that people are still running shine.
