The view from the Standard roof

Todd English wasn't the only big gun repped at last night's Community Board 2 meeting. A crack team from The Standard Hotel was in to apply for three additional bars: a textbook conversion from a service bar to a full bar in The Beer Garden, a stand alone full bar in the 18th floor jacuzzi bar, or as we like to call it, The Black Bar, and - wait for it - a bar on the western side of the building’s rooftop. That's right, Andre and team are getting set for open air rooftop service to complement the Boom Boom Room, and rumor has it that they are considering a few hot tubs to complement the cocktails. Not surprisingly, the board was more than a bit concerned by the doubling of the number of bars in the hotel.

Upon hearing the board's pushback, team Standard chose to defer the rooftop proposal until their consultants at Alan Fierstein & Co. can conduct a sound study. Because the roof towers so far above the rest of the neighborhood, it seems unlikely that noise would disturb the zen like qualities of the MPD. The other two bars are all systems go, since these will be in areas that are already licensed. For safety sake, the approval for The Black Bar comes with a wonderful stipulation calling for someone with CPR training to be on duty at all times in case anyone drowns in the 4ft jacuzzi. Plus, the Standard made it clear from the get-go that these were their original intentions, and that up until recently, the law prohibited an owner from having more than three bars at one location.
