For the penultimate event of the four day long New York City Wine and Food Festival, two dozen New York's top chefs, and a few from out of state, gathered in the far reaches of Chelsea to compete for the title of the best meatball in New York. Judges Gail Simmons, Jeffrey Steingarten, and Frank Bruni powered through each and every submitted choice from the likes of Joey Campanaro (a crowd favorite), Harold Dieterle, Michael White, Amanda Freitag, the Franks from Frankies Spuntino, and even the Eater.com contest winner Michael Sullivan. Just one hour in, the rooms were steamy from the hot meatballs, the old man band was serenading the crowd, and the early attendees starting breaking out in meat sweats. In the end Andrew Carmellini's popular lamb meatball slider from Locanda Verde with a side salad triumphed. Chef said he would give the $5,000 grand prize from sponsor Pat LaFrieda Meats to his chefs.
