The Libertine, Todd English's latest project, is a clubby two floor restaurant set to open in the new Gild Hall Thompson Hotel downtown next week. Heavy on the leather, gold accents, and intentionally messy bookshelves, it looks like an ideal after work hangout for the FiDi suits. The upstairs lounge features large leather couches and a long communal table while the more casual downstairs houses the main bar and smaller tables.
So, she's pretty. But what about the food? The man running the show here will be Eben Leonard, who comes by way of English's Bonfire in Boston and Olive's here in New York. Leonard and English have come up with a menu of "reinterpreted pub fare," which apparently means small plates, a raw bar, and items including caviar sliders, and Berkshire pork chop schnitzel. Time will tell if this is treated more as a serious restaurant or as a swanky bar once she is tested out by the locals and downtown workers. More reading here and here.
