Plywood Super Special: Mei Lai Wah to Rise Again

New, 14 comments

Attention Eric Asimov and all the other fans of Mei Lai Wah, the Chinatown greasy spoon that was shuttered earlier this year after a killer DOH'ing: it will reopen in as little as two days. A tipster wrote in to let us know about the new signage and signs of life, and a spot check confirms. Workers say they plan to open by Friday.

But, don't start the celebrations yet. There is no confirmation that this is the same Mei Lai Wah that we lost back in May. In fact the new signage calling the place the "Mei Li Wah Bakery" (instead of Mei Lai Wah Coffee Shop) may hint at new ownership (as does this earlier tip). If anyone can translate the photo above, it could be another clue. Until then, we'll have to wait for the opening reports to see if the same char siu bao will be in the house.
