The Plywood Report: Little Giant in Chelsea, Archipelago, Ambiance, and More!

New, 1 comment

1) Chelsea: Bruni gets on the blog today to share the news that the folks behind the Little Giant will be opening a second space in Chelsea: "They just signed a lease on a space in Chelsea that will accommodate a restaurant nearly twice the size of Little Giant. And they hope to open the restaurant in the first half of next year. 'It’ll still be refined comfort food,' said Julie Taras Wallach...she’ll be in charge of the cooking at the duo’s new restaurant, tentatively named the Tipsy Parson" [PLYWOOD]

2) Soho West: A tipster has a shot of Archipelago, the space replacing Dani, which according to Metromix's preview, will be headed up by a former Morimoto sous chef: "This Japanese-French bistro...chef'd by former Morimoto sous-chef Hisanobu Osaka, who'll work the secret ingredients...Osaka also helped Chef Morimoto plan menus for 'Iron Chef'." [PLYWOOD]

3) East Village: A tipster notices some changes over on 2nd and 4th: "What’s up at the SE corner of 2nd Ave. and 4th street in the East Village? Was gay bar The Bar for years followed by a generic divey place for the last couple of years. They were closed Sunday night and the other night noticed new awning with the name Ambiance on it, they looked to be opening." The Zagat buzz reports that the venue is run by the same people but just got a new name. [POST-PLYWOOD]

4) Park Slope: Brownstoner reports some plywood news from 3rd Street: "Perhaps inspired by its upscale Stone Park Cafe neighbor to the east, the space where Pizza by the Park used to be — 357 3rd Street in Park Slope — has been upgraded. Villa Rustica, says the sign, will serve Italian cuisine and brick oven pizza. There's another Villa Rustica in Queens. Same owner, ya think?" [PLYWOOD]

5) The Bowery: NYMag's fall preview this week mentions that the new AvroKO project opening in the old Manahatta space will be called Double Crown. The press release offers more details: "Double Crown is inspired by the new aesthetics and cuisines born of the 'in-betweenness' when two disparate cultures meet, in this case the focus is on the nineteenth century British presence in the countries of the Far East, including India, Singapore and China....the space also features a separate bar and lounge, Madame Geneva’s." [POST-PLYWOOD]

6) Park Slope: Gowanus Lounge is keeping watch over the old Cocotte space in Park Slope: "Work on the former Cocotte, which is slated to become an Italian restaurant, is well underway (above). The sign that was in the window proclaiming it an Italian place, however, is gone." [PLYWOOD]

7) Kensington: The Kensington blog has news from their neck of the woods: "We heard from 2 emails that the Oak & Iris will be opening this weekend or early next week depending on the inspection. We've walked by a few times and seen a fancy cappuccino machine and lots of tables as well as a vibrate paint job. We are excited to see the selection and stop in!" [PLYWOOD]
